Additive Manufacturing: From Theory to Practice Summer School

After a few decades, the applications of Additive Manufacturing in the Industry are numerous and rapidly growing. Many aerospace, medical and automotive companies have successfully implemented additive technologies in their production systems, and others are realizing that investments in these technologies are strategic.

The Summer School offers its participants a transversal knowledge of Additive Manufacturing, starting from the additive philosophy and analyzing the motivations that are the basis of the ever wider diffusion of the technology. The school intends to provide participants, also through a learning-by-doing approach, familiarity with the main technologies and related applications, making them able to independently evaluate what is the most suitable process based on the desired product characteristics and production volume. Participants will also be provided with the tools to evaluate how to integrate Additive Manufacturing with conventional techniques, in order to exploit all the potential and obtain significant advantages in terms of cost reduction and time to market.

FEES

The total fee of 250 euro will cover 2-week Summer School with lectures and labs experiences, visit to research lab and AM company, PoliTo tutoring for the whole school activities.

The fee is reduced to 150 € for the early bird registrations (before 15/04/2020).

The school will cover several social events (e.g. welcome coffee, aperitif, social dinner, stay together party) and some extra-didactic activities (e.g. National Automobile Museum, Egyptian Museum, La Venaria Reale, "Langhe-Roero e Monferrato" tour).

Participants have to cover their own travel, accommodation, and food costs, which are not included in the program.

ACTIVITIES

The Summer School includes:

  • seminars, to provide transversal theoretical skills and to describe most recent development in Additive Manufacturing. Seminars will be held by Professors of the Politecnico di Torino and international experts;
  • laboratory activities at the Integrated Additive Manufacturing Interdepartmental Center (IAM @ PoliTo) to provide direct demonstration of the concepts explained during seminars and directly involve the participants. Practical activities are envisaged such as, for example, the preparation of production files, the start of production systems, post-processing activities, characterization of powders and produced components;
  • visit to the research laboratory of the IAM @ PoliTo Center at Alessandria, where participants will have the opportunity to know the procedure for the preparation by gas atomization of metal powders and to attend the production and analysis phases;
  • visit to a leading company in the production of metal AM systems, in order to appreciate the impact of AM technologies in industrial production and to know the aspects related to the realization of AM machines.

The Summer School also includes several extra-didactic activities, including "Langhe-Roero e Monferrato" enogastronomic tour and visits to the city and some urban museums (e.g. National Automobile Museum). There will also be a welcome coffee, an intermediate aperitif and a social dinner, as well as a final poster session and a stay together party, in which students will present results and could discuss work activities, to exchange information.
