Biography

Mariachiara Mecati is a Ph.D. Student in Computer Software Engineering at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. She has a mathematics background thanks to her Master's Degree in Mathematical Engineering, majoring in "Statistics and Optimization on data and network". After a 3 month-period at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Houston (Texas, USA) to develop her research master thesis on neural networks applied on retina fundus images, she moved her research interests to Data science with particular attention to the novel field of Data ethics, with the aim to investigate algorithmic fairness and, above all, the impact of poor data quality and biased data when used by software applications to make automatic decisions affecting individuals.

Awards and Honors

  • I participated in the IEEE WSAIM Young Professional Pitch Competition 2021, held online on December 14, 2021, by presenting the pitch entitled "Effects of Data Quality on Software Application Bias and Mitigation Strategies, Techniques and Tools". (2022)
  • Best paper award at EGOV-2020: the paper titled "Identifying Risks in Datasets for Automated Decision–Making" (presented on September 1, 2020) has been selected as the best paper in the category "The most innovative research contribution or case study" at the "EGOV2020 – IFIP EGOV-CeDEM-EPART 2020" conference.
