Optimization approaches to synchro-modal network problems

Biography

I am Riccardo Giusti, a PhD Student in the Department of Control and Computer Engineering at Politecnico di Torino working in the field of Operations Research on the topic of synchromodal logistics optimization.
Before starting my PhD program, I worked as research fellow in a Horizon 2020 European Research Project called SYNCHRO-NET - Synchro-modal Supply Chain Eco-Net (Project web page). The main role of my research group was to create a simulation tool capable to optimize freight itineraries on a graph representing a synchromodal transport network. Working on SYNCHRO-NET motivated me to start a PhD program to continue to study optimization methods for synchromodality. I started my PhD program by performing a literature review and studying real-life developments related to synchromodality and new technologies in the field of transportation, logistics, and supply-chain management (Survey paper). This study was an essential step to define new research lines and decide my next research projects. Then, I worked on a stochastic transshipment location-allocation problem where transshipment facilities to use must be selected and flows synchronized considering uncertainty on utilities and facility capacities. I designed a two-stage stochastic programming model with recourse and performed different tests to evaluate the economic impact of considering uncertainty and the computation performance of different implementations of a tailored Progressive Hedging algorithm (Technical report). Now, I am working on problems related to real-time re-planning of operations and I am interested in developing some algorithmic methods capable to optimize the synchronization of operations on large graphs.
