Biography

Davide Janner is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Material Sciences and Technology (DISAT) in Politecnico di Torino He received his Ph.D. in Physics from Politecnico di Milano in 2006 and his M.Sc. degree in Physics from Università degli Studi di Milano, Milan (Italy), in 2002. During his Ph.D. he studied light propagation and its localization effects in periodic media both from a theoretical and experimental point of view. From 2006 to the end of 2015 he joined ICFO-The Institute of Photonic Sciences as a post-doctoral researcher working on acousto-optic and electro-optic devices for telecommunication and sensing, specializing on techniques of micro- and nano-fabrication. He worked on materials and devices for advanced optoelectronics based on nanotechnology and 2D materials. Since December 2015 is Associate Professor in Materials Science and his research topics are currently focused on bioresorbable and active glass materials for photonics applications, photonic sensors and materials for micro-/nano-structured multifunctional devices. During the years, he was also committed to many technology transfer activities in the field of processes of nano-fabrication and devices development for leader industries of all sizes, from SME to major multinational companies. He has published more than 90 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, gave 13 invited talks at major international conferences and has 4 granted patents.

Scientific branch

IMAT-01/A - Materials Science and Technology
(Area 0009 - Industrial and information engineering)

Research topics

  • The research activity focuses mainly on three lines: specialty fiber optics for industrial and biomedical applications, functional nanomaterials for sensing and optical applications, laser material processing. Specialty fiber optics: design and fabrication of specialty glasses and fiber optics for applications in the fields of optical amplification and laser aiming at energy-efficient communication systems and detection (e.g. LIDAR). Design and realization of bioresorbable microstructured fiber optics to be used in personalized medicine combining light and drug delivery for therapy and diagnosis. Fiber optics sensors for structural and biomedical applications. Functional nanomaterials: study of nanoscale phenomena for the optimization of nanomaterials based plasmonic sensors (e.g. SERS) to detect pollutants in water and to measure novel biomarkers. Functional treatments to obtain self-cleaning/viricide surfaces and transparent conductors on flexible substrates to obtain industrially scalable processes (e.g. photovoltaics) . Use of 2D materials for the detection of biomolecules. Laser material processing: use of laser for micro- and nano-structuring of surfaces of different types of materials to obtain functionalities like super-hydrophobicity/omniphobicity to realize large-scale self-cleaning or ice-phobic surfaces with applications in automotive/aerospace and biomedical.
