SISCON – Safety for InfraStructures and CONstructions is an applied research center equipped with experimental laboratories. It adopts a concrete mission and a multidisciplinary approach that allows tackling complex issues related to large mobility infrastructures and complex constructions from multiple perspectives. With activities ranging from scientific and technological research to on-site experimentation, the Center is committed to ensuring the sustainability and safety of constructions, bridges, tunnels, and dams, which are fundamental for transport infrastructures, energy infrastructures, and major constructions.

Goals

  • Design safe and sustainable infrastructures and constructions
  • Promote innovation in civil engineering and infrastructure

SISCON and Major Works

Thanks to the multidisciplinary nature of its team, SISCON has supported the technical and quality evaluation of major infrastructure projects in Italy, such as the Modena ring road, the Bologna bypass (“Passante di Bologna”), and the Genoa ring road (“Gronda di Genova”). These projects, which include highway expansions and complex excavation works, will be realized in the coming years in challenging urban contexts.

Bridge|50

SISCON is among the members of the consortium of public bodies, universities, and private entities that gave life to BRIDGE|50, one of the largest research projects on bridge beams currently ongoing in Europe and worldwide. The activity involves an extensive experimental campaign on structures taken from a city viaduct demolished in Turin in 2019, which had been in service for about 50 years. The tests performed are unique for their size, complexity, and the amount of experimental data made available.

Infrastructure Management

SISCON provides support to infrastructure managing entities, such as highway concessionaires (ASPI, ASTM group), Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, and concession companies for Alpine tunnels (Mont Blanc, Frejus, Gran San Bernardo), in drafting, evaluating, validating, and managing infrastructure maintenance and inspection processes.
