The Responsible Risk Resilience Centre (R3C) is the first research centre in Italy dedicated to studying territorial resilience in response to natural and human-made risks, with the goal of safeguarding the country’s territorial heritage.
Established at a time when territorial resilience was not yet part of mainstream policy discourse, the Centre focuses on identifying environmental and socio-economic vulnerabilities in order to design resilient solutions and support institutions, local communities, and businesses in addressing the challenges of today’s global transitions.

Goals

  • Support institutions, communities, and businesses in the ecological transition of territories
  • Understand territorial vulnerability through a multi-risk approach
  • Design integrated solutions and strategies for territorial regeneration and resilience

Success Stories

R3C-GeoResilience: The Open-Source Plugin for Mapping Territorial Vulnerabilities

R3C-GeoResilience is an open-source plugin developed within the QGIS environment that, through place-based mapping of territorial vulnerabilities, aims to strengthen institutional learning capacities and support decision-making processes towards territorial resilience. This plugin provides spatial and multi-risk analysis, identifying areas vulnerable to various types of disturbances, including both static and dynamic ones. By conducting comprehensive vulnerability assessments, it helps cities and territories prepare for uncertainties and disruptions, thereby contributing to enhanced territorial resilience.

Epistemology of Resilience

At a time when adaptive capacity became central in global public policies, the Centre defined resilience through a process of dialogue between different perspectives and disciplines, interpreting it as a driver to promote change in policies and practices of institutions, organizations, and social networks. The outcomes of this work were published in the edited volume Urban Resilience for Risk and Adaptation Governance: Theory and Practice.

Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage

The project RPR – Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage: Risk, Prevention Planning, and Regeneration, funded by the National Office for Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage and Worship Building of the Italian Episcopal Conference, supported the development of a large-scale evaluation method for heritage analysis to assist planning and management policies for protection and enhancement activities. Considering the complexities and specificities of this heritage category, the research identified actions for safeguarding and risk prevention for churches and communities.

Keeping it modern Getty Foundation

This project aimed to produce a feasibility study for the conservation of the two main halls of the Torino Esposizioni complex, designed by Pier Luigi Nervi, focusing on structural and seismic aspects. The results of this research were collected in the Conservation Plan for Nervi’s two pavilions, in collaboration with the Getty Foundation.
