If by school square we mean the urban space in front of school entrances, we have no difficulty in recognising its unique narrative and symbolic power in the urban context. It is the place of encounter and growth that we all experience growing up. It is among the first places we experience independently and where we begin to learn what a city is beautiful or ugly, accessible or closed, respectful of the weak or just the strong.
That square is a delicate point of contact between the city project and the educational project, but also the place where the different communities and actors gravitating around the school meet and exchange ideas. A square that often does not receive the attention of the public, enhancing its potential function, on the one hand, but on the other can be the object of care actions by active citizens.
The proposal then is to generate a broad catalogue that interprets and collects the many different conditions of school squares, communities and active practices, on which to elaborate design responses to return them to their urban, pedagogical and civic mission.
