Learning from Satoyama: The Japanese Way to Sustainable Built Environment
From 22 to 26 June 2026, “Learning from Satoyama: The Japanese Way to Sustainable Built Environment” will take place, a festival organized in collaboration with Politecnico di Torino Japan Hub, Waseda University of Tokyo and the MAO - Museum of Oriental Art of Turin.
The initiative, hosted between the Castello del Valentino and the MAO Torino, will explore issues related to the sustainability of the built environment, from architecture to landscape, through the dialogue between Italian and Japanese scholars, professionals and students.
The concept of Satoyama represents the balance between society and the natural environment, ranging from the circular use of resources typical of the traditional rural model to more contemporary reflections on the ecological sustainability of architecture, cities and landscapes.
The festival will feature three main activities: an international seminar dedicated to research topics on sustainable built environments, an international design workshop aimed at students from the two universities, and a series of public conferences hosted by MAO Torino, involving professors and experts from Politecnico di Torino and Waseda University.
The conferences will be open to the public upon registration via Eventbrite on the MAO website.
