Module Learning Objectives and Skill Acquisition
The module will provide an overview on the topic of Carbon Capture (CC) with a focus on the available technical options for the reduction or removal of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere. The course will analyze the different approaches aimed at capturing and separating carbon dioxide from a dilute source, such as the flue gas of a power or industrial plant. Absorption, adsorption, membrane systems and the most advanced capture technologies will be described. The program will also review how the captured CO2 can be utilized (CCU) to produce fuels, chemicals or other commodities.
The course will examine the Negative Emission Technologies (NET) – i.e., afforestation, algal exploitation, biochar, bioenergy production with carbon capture (BEECS), direct air capture (DAC) – that can be implemented to decrease the CO2 content in the atmosphere with the final goal of mitigating climate change.
