User centric intelligent computing over the cloud-edge-IoT continuum

Description

Edge Intelligence is a new powerful paradigm emerging for 6G networks, broadly defined as a form of system intelligence at the network edge and cooperatively built by various actors (including humans) through wireless communications, edge computing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Importantly, in edge intelligence the communication network is at the service of AI tasks and the two jointly create a new ecosystem for the support of ubiquitous AI-based user applications and effective Human-AI interactions.

Fulfilling the concept of edge intelligence is highly challenging, since it requires leveraging the synergy among users, personal devices, network infrastructure, as well as “things”. For many of the applications that 5G/6G networks are deemed to support, it is indeed crucial to provide self-adaptation and continual-learning capabilities, as well a seamless, efficient interaction between humans and the environment. Examples of such applications include safety systems for automated vehicles, protection of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR), the Metaverse, and Tactile Internet.
