Spray and fuel injection

The research is focused on both the development of innovative solutions for fuel injection in ICE and on the analysis of the resulting sprays. Both experimental and numerical investigations are carried out. The experiments are carried out in the DENERG Advanced ICE Lab that consists of system test rig is fully equipped for a complete characterization of single and multiple injections, in-house developed mechanical and optical techniques for the spray analysis. Sprays generated can be analyzed in controlled environmental conditions and their characteristics are evaluated by means of high-speed cinematography, Schlieren technique as well as an original mechanical technique (Stratigraphical Momentum Spray Analysis) developed at DENERG. Numerical investigations covered main aspects related to spray phenomena, applied also to innovative concepts as the Ducted Fuel Injection.

Examples of recent and currently on-going research activities include the following projects:

  • Development of spray mathematical models for diesel engines;
  • Fluid dynamic characterization of solenoidal and piezo (indirect and direct acting) injector for diesel engine
  • Design of new injection system concepts
  • Development of test rig for the spray analysis
  • Numerical simulation of Ducted Fuel Injection in collaboration with international research centers (SANDIA National Labs, USA)
  • Development of injectors for dual-fuel engines
