Patent searching tools and techniques. Introduction and case studies
In the current global scenario, intellectual property rights play a significant role for an increasingly broad range of technological sectors, universities and industrial fields: understanding its impact in all these areas often requires careful research and study.
Moreover, having a clear picture of how the patent system works is a needed pre-requisite in order to familiarize with current debates and developments on its future evolutions at both transnational and state level. The first lecture will provide important background information to help students, researchers and practitioners understand what patents are, why they are needed, how inventors get them, which is the role of the patent office and why disputes might arise.
The explosion of patent filings in various countries over the past three decades and the digitalization of intellectual property databases pose many challenges and opportunities. The second lecture will analyse in depth a range of approaches to patent searching procedures and techniques with an explicit focus on practical issues and case studies.
