Illuminating Molecular Water Dynamics for Sustainable Technologies of the Future
On Tuesday 19 September 2023, the event entitled "Illuminating Molecular Water Dynamics for Sustainable Technologies of the Future" will be held in Aula 7 of the Politecnico.
Abstract
Advancements in water-related technologies, encompassing water purification, desalination, and electric energy storage, are limited by an insufficient understanding of the intricate many-body molecular dynamics in water across various time scales. In this talk will delve into the cutting-edge understanding of molecular water structure and dynamics from broadband dielectric-terahertz-infrared spectroscopy data. By examining the disparities between the instantaneous and diffusion-averaged structures of water and aqueous electrolytes, will show some previously-overlooked mechanisms in bulk liquids, as well as at the liquid-solid interface. Will demonstrate how this newly acquired knowledge provides a rationale for addressing two challenges of modernity: water treatment and sustainable (electric) energy storage. Will discuss the crucial insights that bridge the gap between fundamental water science and the advancement of water-related technologies.
Speaker: Doctor Vasily Artemov
Biography: Doctor Vasily Artemov joined the Laboratory of Nanoscale Biology at the EPFL in 2022 where he studies liquid-solid interfaces of water with atomically-flat materials. In 2007 he graduated with honors from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technologies (PhysTech). He obtained a Ph.D. at the Prokhorov General Physics Institute in 2010. Between 2013 and 2018, he led the Lab of intermolecular interaction spectroscopy at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow and later the activities on the broadband dielectric spectroscopy of materials for energy applications at Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech). Over the years, he has been invited as a visiting researcher at the University of Augsburg, University of Leeds, Liaoning University, University of Stuttgart, and Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research. Between 2009 and 2021, he was CEO of a company developing technologies for solid-oxide fuel cells and a co-founder of a technological startup developing gas-spectroscopy instruments. Vasily’s monograph entitled "The Electrodynamics of Water and Ice", published by Springer in 2021, has been mentioned among the 20 best Chemical Physics books of all time.
