Abstract
The research aims to contextualize, analyze, file, re-elaborate, and disseminate the theory and practice of the Upcycling of building Topicality and motivations The research frame is encouraged by current factors - many of which are related to contemporary energy and environmental crises, exacerbated by the current geopolitical situation - including the stimulus of EU policies on the rational use of building materials, the aging of the Italian built heritage, and the rise in the prices of building materials. In this perspective, the research project is part of the strategies of the European Green Deal and the proposal for a "New European Bauhaus" and concerning this call, the "Environmental Quality" axis, with specific reference to "Cluster 2: Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society”, point no. 3 and no. 4. Strategic objectives: • Historical/theoretical framework: a different point of view on European culture of construction (1945-2022) • Filing of Best Practices at the European level (1945-2022) • Definition of a critical theory on the subject • Theoretical/design analysis and re-elaboration: identification of models/principles of use that can be repeated nationally in Italy. • Dissemination of a widespread culture of Upcycling in Italy Innovativeness: • Application of the Upcycling principles to the specific scale of the building. • Analysis of the technical, compositional, and aesthetic potential/criticalities of an architectural design consistent with the circular economy principles. • Experimentation of updated and calibrated narrative/storytelling/dissemination methods for heterogeneous audiences. Expected outcomes: D1) Production of historical and theoretical frameworks to support the understanding of the phenomenon, as: - D1.1 Theoretical frameworks - D1.2 Design Workshop D2) Production of open databases to support the design practice in terms of Upcycling and DfD, as: - D2.1 European Atlas of Upcycling Best Practices 1945-2022. - D2.2 Italian Manual of the Upcycling Architect. - D2.3 Upcycling E-learning platform (MOOC for different audiences).
