Spoke 8 supports research activities bolstering European risk management strategies that are oriented to design, implement and test countermeasures ensuring that citizens and industries can fully benefit from cyber secure and reliable digital services and infrastructures. In this context, this Spoke proposes the necessity to deal with both cyber and physical resilience of present and future critical entities in line with the European Directive on measures for high common level of cybersecurity across the Union (NIS Directive, revised NIS 2 Directive), and with the Italian ACN objectives. To these purposes, this Spoke will manage two synergic research projects that are integrated with the national partnership: imPROving The rEsilience to Cyberattacks of distributed ICT InfrastrucTures (PROTECT-IT), and Risk management for future cyber-physical ecosystems (EcoCyber). PROTECT-IT is oriented to address the issues related to existing network-based security solutions that are inadequate to face increasing cyberattacks. Its goal is to design and build a novel distributed platform leveraging AI-ML and policy-based enforcement solutions that can automatically identify new threats and deploy immediate autonomous cybersecurity countermeasures even in critical scenarios. EcoCyber considers that the future cyber-physical ecosystem will open novel security, resilience, privacy and safety issues that should be addressed through a holistic and continuous risk management assessment. This project focuses on industrial plants and smart cities, but it is also correlated to the goals of other projects of this partnership on critical infrastructures. Moreover, it is oriented to propose novel governance policies and regulatory solutions to promote cybersecurity, privacy, resilience, and gender balance at national and international level.
