Abstract

The world energy framework has been significantly changing in the last years, as a consequence of the challenging goals in terms of decarbonization, the increasing energy demand of developing countries and, politically, the requirements of energy independency. In this framework, renewable energy sources are expected to increase their share towards very high percentages. To properly proceed towards such energy scenarios, if on one side there is an indubitable need of appropriate technologies for generation/distribution/storage, on the other side there is a new and crucial role that is expected to be played by energy utilities and end-users. The full problem cannot be faced only from a technical viewpoint, but with the integration of the engineering aspects with legal, sociologic and economic considerations. ReveDH project proposes a breakthrough approach able to formulate the latest energy engineering problems in a multidisciplinary way which includes the definition of a common language, an analysis of the energy scenarios from the different perspectives, the formulation of a comprehensive optimization problem and the discussion of the results. A specific problem, which is of primary relevance both in terms of global impact on urban areas and from the research approach viewpoint, is the transition of District Heating (DH) from the current energy system towards its future role in a society no more based on fossil fuels. DH represents a unique chance to realistically drive the energy transition because it allows the integration of renewable energy sources/waste heat output (RESWH) in urban areas but also provide a huge source of flexibility to the electricity grid. Transition requires the use of DH in a different way than what is currently performed, which pillars are described in B.1. ReveDH starting from an engineering approach, will propose innovative engineering solutions to boost the penetration of local renewable energy resources into DH infrastructure. The holistic and multilevel approach (B.2.1) created in ReveDH, will provide quantitative answers on the best strategy to make the existing infrastructure technically compatible with the requirements of future 100% RESWH systems, optimizing together, along the technical aspects, the potentials/benefits on the end-user involvement defining strategies to overcome communication barriers, gender differences, anxieties/desires (sociological), the legal issues to enhance the juridic framework, paying attention to protection of end-user and their data, and the definition of a new appropriate DH market framework to enable distributed generation considering price differentiation and interaction with the electricity grid (economic). ReveDH has the ambition to become a) a beacon to guide the transition towards RESWH supplied DH b) an inspirational project that will show the primary importance of combining different competences to inclusively reach the goal of a green and cohesive society.
