Abstract

Hydrogen can play a substantial role in alleviating emissions in the coming decades and being part of the mosaic of solutions for the mitigation of the climate change. Particularly green hydrogen can serve as the crucial link in the energy transition journey to decarbonized end use applications in otherwise hard to abate sectors such as some transport and industrial segments. In addition, as it can be used both as a feedstock and as an energy vector, helping the integration of large amounts of variable renewable energy sources to offer flexibility in the power sector.i The European Union (EU) has been encouraging a clean hydrogen economy by 2030. Furthermore, EU’s strategy to achieve its 2050 decarbonisation goals foresees 24% of hydrogen contributing to the total energy demand by 2050, 560?Mt CO2 abatement per year, 820 bn euro annual revenue generation, and a 15% reduction in local emission.ii The rapid development of the European Hydrogen Value Chain is expected to create approximately 1 million highly skilled jobs by 2030, and up to 5.4 million by 2050. With this rising momentum in developing hydrogen economy, fundamental, scientific, technical, and social research on this subject is increasing, proving the interest of academicians and researchers on hydrogen as well as industries. In this regard, Politecnico di Torino, who coordinates the activities, Delft University of Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Politecnico di Milano, and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya together with SNAM SPA and other contacted companies are showing an interest in creating “Hydrogen Systems and Enabling Technologies” (HySET), a joint master program fully dedicated to hydrogen sphere. The aim of HySET is to educate well-trained and enthusiastic professionals with an extensive multidisciplinary knowledge of hydrogen technologies and systems; their training occurs in an international, multicultural environment to stimulate global collaboration to cope with the complex challenges of the energy transition. Cooperation between academic and industrial partners is one key principles of the program. HySET covers the whole hydrogen value chain: Hydrogen production technologies, Hydrogen storage technologies, Hydrogen transportation/logistic/infrastructure, Hydrogen end uses (stationary, mobility, industry, residential, including fuel cells), Hydrogen safety, codes and standards, including all the socio-economic aspects related to a huge transition to Hydrogen use. The program is organized over a total of 120 ECTS. In their first-year students will acquire fundamental knowledge, for 30 ECTS in the first semester, and industrial knowledge, for 30 ECTS in the second semester, on the hydrogen value chain through courses taken at one entry point university (entry points will be Politecnico di Torino and Politecnico di Milano). In the second year the students will take the opportunity to have more specialized courses, for 30 ECTS in the third semester moving to another partner university, and ultimately to complete a final graduate dissertation, for 30 ECTS in the fourth semester, preferably as internship at one participating company.
