Abstract

NANOHYLUM will develop innovative nano-hybrids platforms based on inorganic nanocrystals and nanocarbons for use in solution-processed light emitting devices to improve their stability and tackle emerging challenges in the field. In the recent years, a plethora of materials systems have been designed to improve the performance of electroluminescent technologies and to develop new and attractive applications. Limitations of state-of-the-art devices based on organic materials (semiconducting polymers) and on emerging hybrid materials (metal halide perovskites) derive largely from material stability issues after prolonged operation. NANOHYLUM will tackle this challenge by leveraging the enhanced stability of certain, carefully selected, nanocrystals and nanocarbons, in novel light-emitting nano-hybrids. The exploration of these new materials combinations will set the basis for the development of efficient synthetic strategies towards complex nano- architectures, as well as pave the way to more durable light emitting layers. NANOHYLUM will target the design and preparation of visible and near-infrared (NIR) light emitting species, the latter case being an emerging area that attracts wide and increasing interest, e.g. for application to the biomedical sector, which will be formulated into functional inks suitable for high-throughput solution processing methods (advanced spray coating). Their impact will be demonstrated by fabricating first proof-of-concept electroluminescent devices (in LED architectures). To this aim NANOHYLUM will build on the expertise of the host group in the construction of nanocarbon-based hybrids/composites and on the researcher skills in the synthesis of controlled shape/size nanocrystals, while will benefit from the active collaboration (through well-structured secondments) of internationally-leading groups across Europe (Gross ´ group at University of Padova and Cacialli ´s group at University of Bolzano), as detailed in the full proposal.
