Abstract

The project intends to investigate the dynamic relationship between the medieval (12th-15th century) Piedmontese Carthusian monasteries and the environment; a relationship that has given rise to a certain type of landscape whose permanence can still be traced and enhanced today. The Carthusian monasteries in the Piedmont area built in the medieval centuries (12th-15th) will be examined, listed here in order of foundation: Casotto; Pesio; Montebenedetto/Losa; Buonluogo; Mombracco The project intends to highlight a specific temporal stratification, that of the Middle Ages, and a specific landscape, that of the Carthusian monasteries in Piedmont, and to verify their permanence over the centuries. The intention is therefore to analyse the way in which an institution - the Charterhouse - has interacted with its environment and been influenced by it, creating a cultural landscape. At the centre of the analysis is not a single subject, taken individually, but a relationship, that between man and the environment - seen not as a mere passive background - observed in its becoming over time. The intention is to look at events through a critical anthropocentrism, which, rather than excluding or ignoring man, attempts instead to understand the dynamic interactions between societies and ecosystems. The approach to landscape study must be interdisciplinary, i.e. involve active communication between knowledge, the intersection of expertise and the integration of research objectives. In this way, the research project may not be aimed exclusively at pure investigation but may imply repercussions on the protection, conservation choices, management and valorisation of cultural heritage. In this context, research takes on a social service value offered to users and in particular to resident populations. The heritage of landscapes is an asset that it is primarily up to the historian to enhance. The protection of cultural heritage passes through its recognition and cognitive deepening. The project intends to bring together different categories of sources - material sources (natural morphological features, orographical and hydrographical layouts, buildings, infrastructures) as well as archive sources - in the effort of an interdisciplinary investigation: the landscape thus becomes a place of confrontation, of conflicts of criticism where the range of "facts" to be verified widens because the data to be taken into account on the basis of interdisciplinary stimuli increases. The results of the search will be fed into a archive of Carthusian sources. The archive will be integrated into an openaccess online platform: each Carthusian monastery will be given a fact sheet with historical, historical-architectural information; 2d drawings and 3d virtual models. The project is divided into four Milestones: Data acquisition/Data processing/Data synthesis/Project Management.
