Biography

Lithium-ion batteries are fundamental components in modern energy storage systems, particularly in electric mobility and renewable energy applications. As the demand for high-performance and reliable battery systems continues to grow, understanding the mechanisms responsible for battery degradation has become increasingly important.

In this context, the focus of my research is the analysis of the interplay between mechanical and electrochemical phenomena occurring during battery operation and aging. The project will focus on the study of degradation mechanisms and the estimation of the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of lithium-ion cells under different current cycling conditions.

In addition, several studies have shown that the application of external compressive loads can improve battery performance and durability by enhancing internal contact conditions and mitigating degradation phenomena. Nevertheless, the interaction between the applied pressure and the electrochemical response is still not completely understood.

Against this background, the project aims to experimentally investigate the behavior of lithium-ion batteries under controlled compression, evaluating the influence of pressure on the performance, with the objective of identifying optimal operating conditions. The experimental activity will be supported by multiscale and multiphysics numerical modeling to explain the coupled mechanical and electrochemical phenomena responsible for the observed behavior.

The research activities may be structured as follows:
  • Literature review and state-of-the-art analysis;
  • Design and development of an experimental test bench;
  • Definition and implementation of experimental campaigns;
  • Development of the electrochemical-mechanical modeling framework;
  • Model validation.
