Biography

João C. Silva completed his PhD in Bioengineering Cell Therapies & Regenerative Medicine in September 2019 (with Distinction and Honor - >top 2% students) under the scope of a collaborative international and multidisciplinary project between the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI, United States) and the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB) from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST)-University of Lisbon. Throughout his PhD, which comprised a period as a visiting scholar at RPI (Feb 2017-Dec 2018), João C. Silva developed research work in different areas such as Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Material Science Engineering, Stem Cell Biology and Additive Manufacturing. João C. Silva also holds a Masters Degree in Biomedical Engineering (Dec 2013), during which he had the opportunity to gain international experience through an Erasmus exchange program grant to study at Czech Technical University of Prague (Sep 2011-Feb 2012). During his MSc thesis (Feb 2013-Dec 2013), he developed research work in the areas of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology focusing on gene delivery strategies to modulate stem cell differentiation. Afterward, João C. Silva worked as a researcher in 3B's Research Group, University of Minho (Jun 2014-Jan 2015). João C. Silva is currently an MSCA postdoctoral fellow at Politecnico di Torino and a Visiting Researcher at IBB-IST. His research interests focus mainly on: i) tailoring biomaterials structure and composition to mimic stem cell microenvironments; ii) development of novel biomimetic and bioactive scaffold-based approaches for improved tissue regeneration; iii) design and prototyping of bioreactor devices for the fabrication of tissue-engineered constructs under controlled in vivo-like biophysical stimulation. João C. Silva (h-index:18; >1200 citations) has published 44 peer-reviewed articles and 17 conference papers in international scientific journals. He is also the author of 1 book chapter, 1 encyclopedia entry, co-author of 1 patent(WO2015151030A1), and presented his work in more than 30 international scientific conference meetings (31 oral/30 poster presentations). João C. Silva is currently the responsible for the EU MSCA project SYNERGIES and PI of the FCT project InSilico4OCReg(PTDC/EME-SIS/0838/2021, 250 K €). He was/is also an active member of other 9 FCT-funded projects (Funding: 1.65 M €). João C. Silva is a member of the Reviewer Board for the journals Polymers and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and has reviewed articles for 65+ scientific journals in the fields of Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine (Acta Biomate., Adv. Science, ACS Applied Bio Materials, Mater. Sci. Eng C, Sci. Rep.). João Silva also served as special issue guest-editor for the journals Polymers ("Advanced Polymeric Scaffolds for Stem Cell Engineering and Regenerative Medicine"), International Journal of Bioprinting ("Bioprinting-based strategies for regenerative medicine, drug development and food technology applications") and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology ("Advanced bioprocessing strategies for tissue engineering and disease modelling applications"). He is a member of the scientific organizations American Chemical Society (ACS), European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS), CellAgri Portugal and European Biomechanics Society(ESB). João Silva's academic partners include researchers from RPI (USA), University of Nottingham (UK), UPC-Barcelona Tech(Spain), Center for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP)-IPLeiria(PT) and Centro de Investigação Interdisciplinar Egas Moniz (CiiEM, PT). He works also in close collaboration with a clinical partner (Dr. Nuno A. Ribeiro - orthopedic surgeon at Hospital de Lusíadas, Lisboa) and with industrial partners the healthcare companies Bioceramed and CERAMED-Medical Coatings, which work
