Biography

G.M.’s main research activity concerns the development of multiphysics/multiscale integral experimental-numerical methodologies to simultaneously setup novel manufacturing process and to predict the final properties of the materials by design with the minimum contribution of experimental tests. He has reserarched on powder injection moulding of metals and ceramics, superrapid sintering of metallic and ceramic nanopowders, plasma DC-chemical vapour deposition of diamond thin films under centrifugal conditions , self-propagating combustion synthesis (SHS) of hard coatings, crystal growth and rapid solidification processes, ultrafast welding of similar and dissimilar alloys, spark plasma sintering of metallo-ceramic nanocomposite, milliwave sintering of ceramics, radiofrequency heating of dielectric materials, surface induction hardening of steels and cast iron, additive manufacturing by EBM of Ti6Al4V, laser wire deposition and repair of steel tooling. He has experienced long-term research collaboration with many Japanese laboratories (NIMS, AIST), universities and private companies and has been involved many EU research projects. He has developed special expertise on d.c. plasma diagnostics by optical spectroscopy under high and low-gravity conditions, hypersonic cold spray of ceramics, synthesis of metallic nanoparticles by capacitive discharge evaporation of rods, material synthesis during parabolic flights and free fall conditions. Most of the developed researches are devoted to industrials sectors of cutting tools, molds, high-performance mechanical components for automotive and aerospace applications. He has developed customized self-consistent multiphysics / multiscale simulation codes for international research and industry (Fortran, Matlab, C++, etc.) based on finite elements technique coupled with discrete techniques (eg. molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, particle in cell, DSMC, neural networks and fractal) or develop research models with the aid of commercial codes (e.g. Ansys, Sysweld, Comsol Multiphysics, Phoenics, Ace+, Magnasoft, LS-Dyna, FLEXPDE, Welding ESI, Flux2D/3D, etc.). He has been organizer of or served as chairman/rapporteur to scientific symposia under the International Federation of Astronautics Congress (IAF) and Euromat International Conference. He has served as Italian coordinator of the Italy-Japan Network of Excellence on Nanomaterials, processing and nanodevices under the support of EU Directorate General of Research and Italian Embassy in Tokyo.
