Biography

Giacomo Patrucco is PhD in Geomatics (2023). He graduated in Architecture for Sustainable Design at the Polytechnic University of Turin in 2016. Since 2015 he has been a member of the student team DIRECT (Disaster RECovery Team) where he currently holds the role of tutor. Since 2017 he has been collaborating with the Laboratory of Geomatics for Cultural Heritage (G4CH Lab, Polytechnic University of Turin) in several research projects and teaching activities. At the moment he is holding the role of technical responsible of the Laboratory. He partecipated in several documentation missions in UNESCO Word Heritage sites in Oman, Turkmenistan, Bahrain, London, Iraq, Mongolia, Kurdistan, Turkey. He is currently collaborating with CRAST (Centro Ricerche Archeologiche e Scavi di Torino) in the framework of research experiences regarding the investigation techniques in archaeological contexts, with GiFLE (Grupo de Investigación en Fotogrametría y Láser Escáner) of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (Departamento de Ingeniería Cartográfica, Geodesia y Fotogrametría) on a research on the the implementation of multispectral images in the framework of photogrammetric pipelines for the documentation, monitoring and non-invasive diagnostic of the built heritage and with MAIER (Missione Archeologica Italiana a Hierapolis di Frigia). His research actually focuses on several aspects regarding 3D metric survey techniques (data acquisition through geomatic techniques aimed at documenting built heritage; movable heritage digitisation; classification and semantic segmentation of images using machine learning and deep learning techniques; optical and multispectral 3D data fusion; documentation and monitoring of archaeological sites using 3D sensing technologies and non-visible imagery).

Research topics

  • Classification and semantic segmentation of images using deep learning techniques aimed at optimising photogrammetric pipelines and automatic identification of built assets degradation.
  • Digitisation of museum artefacts using geomatic techniques (very close-range digital photogrammetry, structured light 3D scanning systems, triangulation-based laser scanning systems).
  • Documentation and monitoring of archaeological sites using geomatic techniques.
  • Use of multispectral images (NIR, TIR, etc.) in photogrammetric processes aimed at the documentation, monitoring and non-invasive diagnostic of built heritage.
