Biography

Andrea Bocco, aka Andrea Bocco Guarneri, Ph.D., is Professor of Architectural Technology at the Politecnico di Torino, and heads the Inter-University Department of Urban and Regional Studies of the Politecnico di Torino and the University of Turin (DIST). He teaches Appropriate technology and low-tech architecture.

He worked in the field of participatory urban regeneration, local development, community hubs, and public space. He founded and directed the Local Development Agency of San Salvario (Torino).

His research and publications deal with, among other topics, Bernard Rudofsky, Yona Friedman, analysis of the built environment, regeneration of mountain villages, as well as ontology applied to the architecture and construction field. During the last decade he has been increasingly focussing on low-tech contemporary architecture, construction with natural materials, and the assessment of environmental impact of 'alternative' techniques and lifestyles.

ICAR/12 - ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY
(Area 0008 - Civil engineering and architecture)

Research topics

  • AWN - Ontology in the field of architecture and building, also to be applied to computational terminological resources.
  • BAUWEISE vs. LEBENSWEISE - Analysis of critical and radical technological thinking: appropriate technology, technology meant as a tool at the service of human beings, eco-technics.
  • FUTURE IN TRADITION - Investigation on the cultural heritage and the traditional architecture and built environment, particularly in marginal regions such as mountain areas. The investigation was focused on the analysis of traditional buildings, settlements, landscapes and material culture, and allowed to develop of future-oriented proposals for their revitalisation, calling into question our development model.
  • LOW TECH - Research on simple building technologies, based on natural, low-impact materials, as well as on contemporary architecture based on such materials and techniques. Includes research into the environmental impact of construction choices, and on assessment methodologies.
  • NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT - Theoretical investigation, professional practice and activism in urban regeneration, local development, social housing, community hubs, public space.
