Biography

I am a member of the Department of Mathematical Sciences (DISMA) “G.L. Lagrange” of the Polytechnic of Turin, where I conduct research and teaching activity as a Full Professor (L.240/2010) of Mathematical Physics. My principal scientific interests are theoretical and computational mechanics, with particular care for analytical mechanics, for the differential geometry aspects connected to it, and for the mechanics of continua, of porous media and of multiphasic materials. I devote my research mainly to the biomechanics of growth and remodeling of biological tissues by developing mathematical models that originate from the Theory of Elastoplasticity. Moreover, I work on: Asymptotic Homogenization Theory, for the constitutive characterization of some highly heterogeneous materials, including the electro-active ones; Fractional Calculus, for studying the constitutive response of materials with non-local behavior; dynamics of dislocations; and nematic elastomers. The most relevant points of my educational and professional paths are: Laurea Degree (equipollent to a Master of Science) in “Mechanical Engineering” (a five-year study track), received from the University of Catania on October 21, 2002. PhD in Physical Engineering (a three-year program), received from the University of Catania on February 21, 2006 (Supervisor: Prof. Gaetano Giaquinta). From September 1, 2006, to August 31, 2007, scholarship awarded by CNISM (Inter-university National Consortium for the Physical Sciences of the Matter). From September 1, 2007, to September 30, 2008, post-doctoral position at the “Ruprecht-Karls” University Heidelberg, Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Gabriel Wittum. From October 1, 2008, to December 15, 2011, post-doctoral position at the “Wolfgang Goethe” University Frankfurt, Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Gabriel Wittum. From December 16, 2011, to September 30, 2014: Assistant Professor of Mathematical Physics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences (DISMA) of the Polytechnic of Turin. From October 1, 2014, to April 15, 2025: Associate Professor (L.240/2010) of Mathematical Physics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences (DISMA) of the Polytechnic of Turin. From April 16, 2025, to date: Full Professor (L.240/2010) of Mathematical Physics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences (DISMA) of the Polytechnic of Turin.
