Biography

After a Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Engineering, I achieved a Master's Degree in Mechatronic Engineering in 2021 at Politecnico di Torino with the thesis “Dictionary of motion primitives for vision-based navigation using Optical Flow”.
I'm currently a Ph.D. student in Electrical, Electronics, and Communications Engineering under the guidance of Professor Gianluca Setti and Professor Marcello Chiaberge. I’m also a member of the Interdepartmental Centre for Service Robotics at Politecnico di Torino (https://pic4ser.polito.it/member/chiara-boretti/).
My academic and research background has predominantly revolved around visual navigation. In fact, I conducted my master's thesis under the guidance of Professor John Baillieul at Boston University, where we developed a control algorithm based on visual cues known as "time-to-transit" for ground robot navigation. Currently, I am collaborating with Professor Baillieul to further enhance this algorithm.
Moreover, I’m also exploring the possibilities offered by novel neuromorphic-inspired visual sensors known as event-based cameras in the field of service robotics. Specifically, I am currently working on harnessing the output of these visual sensors to address tasks such as person detection, re-identification, and tracking. I am interested in understanding the limitations of classical approaches when dealing with event streams and in exploring new techniques that can preserve their advantages, such as sparsity and asynchronicity, and the advantages offered by the use of event-based cameras.
