Biography

Arianna Astolfi is Full Professor of Building Physics and Building Energy Systems at the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Torino, where she is responsible for the Applied Acoustics Laboratory. She has been vice-President of the European Acoustical Association since 2022, co-chair of the EAA Technical Committee of Room and Building Acoustics since 2017 and member of the National Council of the Italian Acoustic Association since 2014. Arianna serves the Italian National Unification Body (UNI) since 2016. She is associate editor of the journals “Applied Acoustics” and “Frontiers in Built Environment” and member of the editorial board of “Acoustics” and “Building Acoustics”. Her main research interests include classroom acoustics, speech intelligibility and voice monitoring, but she is also works on sound diffusion, acoustical characterization of materials, sound insulation, soundscape. She is author of more than 90 peer-reviewed journal papers and hundreds of conference papers; she has three patents and has created two start-ups incubated in the I3P incubator of the Politecnico di Torino.

ING-IND/11 - BUILDING PHYSICS AND BUILDING ENERGY SYSTEMS
(Area 0009 - Industrial and information engineering)

Research topics

  • Acoustic materials: The research aims to characterize the scattering properties according to ISO 17497-1 and the absorptive properties according to ISO 354 of different materials through measurements in a 1:5 scaled reverberation room. Computational analyses with finite-element simulations and theoretical models are also performed.
  • Acoustic performance based design: The research applies computational research methods and parametric models to study geometrical shapes that optimize acoustic quality. The use of these tools in acoustic software and other software in the fields of design or building physics allows architects to explore optimal solutions on different aspects following an integrated procedure.
  • Antropic noise control: The research aim is to validate SEM (Speech and Sound Semaphore) that is a patented smart device which measures irrelevant speech noise levels and, on the base of an adaptive algorithm, advices people to lower their voice volume or change behaviour by the activation of red, yellow and green lights.
  • Archeoacoustic: The research deals with the contemporary use of the ancient classical architectures for performing arts. Fruition and valorisation of acoustic aspects are investigated through in-situ measurements and simulations, and evaluated with subjective surveys and perceptual listening tests.
  • Classroom Acoustics: The research deals with the improvement of acoustical quality in classrooms of different grades. Through measurements, surveys and simulations, the effects of noise and room acoustics on vocal effort of teachers and on speech comprehension of students are particularly investigated, as well as the effect on well-being and cognitive performances.
  • Perceptual assessment of scattered sound field: The research aims to investigate the perceptual effects of diffusive surfaces through measurements and simulations. The main objective is to give architects guidelines for the optimal use of these surfaces by evaluating the most effective location and extension in relation to the location and extension of the sound absorptive ones.
  • Sound design: The research deals with SounBe®, an innovative patented tool for the design of sound generated by objects and surface textures when variously solicited. The tool classifies sounds emitted by materials when solicited according to normalised procedures and provides psychoacoustic parameters and attributes for sound description based on a common vocabulary.
  • Sound Insulation: The research concerns sound insulationi improvement of lightweight or heavy innovative opaque facade walls, which are also optimised from the thermal point of view. Experimental and numerical investigations on reduction of vibrations across building joints is another focus of the research. Studies are also referred to impact sound insulation applied to Italian building floorings. The research is carried out in collaboration with the National Institute of Metrological Research (INRiM) of Turin.
  • Soundcsape: The research aim is to explore soundscape in urban areas through in-field subjective surveys, binaural measurements, simulations and laboratory tests based on auralised sound fields. Further objectives are to find out relationships with lightscapes and urban blight as well as with subjective outcomes on perceived safety and overall environmental quality.
  • Speech intelligibility: The research deals with the assessment and improvement of speech intelligibility for normal hearing, hearing impaired and hearing aided adults and children, in challenging and frequently attended environments. It is based on a matrix speech intelligibility test validated in Italian in collaboration with the Cluster of Excellence H4A of Oldenburg.
  • Voice monitoring: The research, in collaboration with Department of Electronics of Politecnico di Torino and Università di Torino, aims to discover new parameters for illnesses detection from the vibrations of the vocal fold at the base of the neck. These are then implemented in monitoring devices based on the validated Voice-Care® technology.
