Riabilitazione ed INnovazione per l’Analisi Sostenibile del Cammino nella paralisi cERebrale infantilE
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive neurological condition that affects motor control and posture, limiting the independence and quality of life of children and their families. In Italy, approximately 1,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, with an estimated prevalence of 2–3 cases per 1,000 live births. Motor rehabilitation plays a crucial role in treatment; however, its effectiveness depends on the ability to assess patients' progress through objective and quantitative evaluation methods.
This project aims to develop a portable, low-cost system for the assessment of movement and muscle spasticity, based on a single RGB-D camera and a high-density electromyography (HD-EMG) system. The proposed solution will enable accurate, non-invasive evaluation of gait and muscle activation patterns in outpatient settings, improving the clinical management of children with cerebral palsy while reducing regional disparities in access to specialised rehabilitation services across Piedmont through continuous, personalised monitoring.
The project is expected to generate direct benefits across four key levels of the rehabilitation system: patients, families, healthcare professionals, and regional and national healthcare services.
Its primary objective is to improve the accessibility, continuity, and quality of rehabilitation for children with cerebral palsy by reducing the overall burden on patients and their families while promoting a more objective, digitally enabled, and sustainable clinical approach that can be implemented directly within outpatient rehabilitation centres.
