Abstract

This project forms part of an ongoing research stream within the DIST department and the interdisciplinary centre FULL, examining the relationship between the city and the university. The focus is the establishment of an observatory to monitor the characteristics of the university student population and its interaction with the city of Turin, with particular attention to housing issues affecting non-local students. The observatory is a vital tool to understand the size and characteristics of this population, including their regions of origin, places of residence in Turin, and their engagement with interventions by public and private stakeholders, the third sector, and territorial transformation strategies implemented by relevant administrations.. The practical objectives of the observatory are:

  • To construct a database on the student population, especially non-resident students, detailing composition (origin, age, gender, etc.) and geographic distribution.
  • To investigate key issues relating to the right to study, including the diverse nature of needs, access to services and housing, trends in housing demand and supply, discrimination, particularly towards foreign students or those from vulnerable backgrounds, and forms of social and civic mobilisation.
  • To co-ordinate active stakeholders within the university and student systems, facilitating joint decision-making processes.
  • To prepare and publish data and analyses to support decision-making processes and initiatives undertaken by public authorities, student support services, and the student population itself.
