Abstract
LEGEND (Leading-Edge evaluation and GENeration of Defect-tolerance in composite structures) is a MSCA DN that will train 14 Doctoral Candidates (DCs), with partners across 6 countries, on understanding and dealing with the effects of defects (EoD) in composite structures, through targeted industry-driven improvements in inspection, characterisation, and modelling techniques, to address this particularly hot-topic for the EU aerospace sector. EoDs represent one of the largest remaining barriers to delivering aircraft that are lighter, more sustainable, faster to certify, and safer. To meet Green Deal ambitions, the EU aerospace sector must (i) enable faster adoption of advanced composite systems through improved qualification processes, (ii) advance safety by establishing robust predictive design tools and inspection protocols for capturing EoDs and assessing their criticality, and (iii) minimise production and maintenance waste by defining better-informed DAC.
Solving these challenges will unlock significant progress toward the EU’s environmental, economic, and safety goals. LEGEND aims to address these challenges by developing an efficient, well-linked, and experimentally validated multi-fidelity modelling framework, accelerated by Machine Learning, capable of capturing the stochastic effects and assessing the criticality of defects on the integrity of composite structures. This framework, assisted by improved Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) practices and novel experimental methods for EoD characterisation, aims to reduce material waste and time costs from material qualification campaigns and over-conservative re-pair/discard practices, while providing better means of ensuring safety and avoiding oversight through improved tools for certification. LEGEND will equip 14 DCs with the knowledge and tools for assessing EoDs in advanced composite materials, contributing to a new generation of highly-skilled engineers and researchers, enhancing their employability.
