Abstract
The LIFE ERICE project introduces an innovative, highly sustainable insulation panel made primarily from recycled rice straw and wool scraps, accounting for over 85% of its weight. Thanks to an advanced production process, the panel achieves excellent technical performance, including a thermal conductivity of up to 0.036 W/mK, high breathability, and natural fire resistance, at a competitive cost comparable to rock wool and often lower than other natural materials. By embedding agricultural residues within durable building materials, the project not only reduces energy consumption in buildings but also offers a scalable pathway for long-term carbon storage, directly supporting climate change mitigation.
The technical and environmental performance of the ERICE panel will be rigorously validated in both laboratory and real-world settings, including mock-ups and full-scale buildings in Italy and Spain, with the involvement of external beta testers. The project will optimize and certify the panel for market introduction, pursuing CE marking and an Environmental Product Declaration to facilitate access to green building labels and public procurement. A comprehensive sustainability assessment will quantify the environmental and socio-economic benefits, demonstrating improved circularity and reduced climate impact compared to conventional solutions. To accelerate market uptake, the project will develop a robust business plan, analyze market scenarios, and identify replication opportunities, leveraging the Ricehouse’s proven track record in commercializing rice straw panels. Possible incentive mechanisms will be investigated, while project results will contribute to the ongoing debate on the benefits and untapped potential of certification schemes for carbon sequestration from crop by-products. The main outcomes of these analyses will be included in a white paper on the key technical/environmental benefits and legislative links of the proposed solution.
