Abstract
SENSIBAT’s overall objective is to increase safety and improve lifetime and usability of Li-ion batteries by developing an innovative battery cell concept with novel integrated sensor technology that closely monitors the batteries’ internal processes on cell level. The data from these new sensing technologies will be used for the development of improved state estimator functions based on the understanding of degradation and failure mechanisms. These functions will be included in a BMS. The improved understanding enables faster and more accurate control of the individual cells in a battery system, during (fast) charging, battery (2nd life) use in different weather conditions. It will also result in better lifetime prediction models and preventive maintenance schemes. To achieve this overall objective, this has been broken down into 5 sub-objectives: 1. Develop the battery cell sensor technology 2. Integrate the sensor technology in (pouch) battery cells 3. Develop a 24V battery module with a BMS using these cells 4. Use the new sensing data to create and model improved state estimation functions 5. Evaluate the various aspects of industrial applicability of the sensors, and use this to develop an exploitation plan.
