Abstract
This project focuses on the opportunities that the transition of the traditional Space Industry towards the New Space Economy - an industry reconfiguration triggered by several trends at the global level (e.g, satellite miniaturization, launch activities liberalization, interoperability between satellite and digital data) – may exhibit for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the United Nations in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Specifically, the project aims at developing new theoretical models for the integration of a sustainable-oriented paradigm in the creation of value in industrial activities, receiving the global call which identified Space as a potential “SDG agent”. Drawing upon extant literature, the research will offer a multi-layer theoretical model for 1) the design of Sustainable-Oriented Ecosystem, shedding light of the renewed roles of actors and their mutual interaction within the overall structure; 2) the design of innovative Sustainable-Oriented Business Models, offering an activity-based perspective centered in the specific actors belonging to the ecosystem; and 3) the combined use of different converging technologies to enable the abovementioned Sustainable-Oriented structures. Relying upon a mixed method approach, Research Units will leverage on their long-lasting research experience in the three identified areas to advance knowledge in these fields, adopting an original and innovative approach centered in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. Doing so, the project will also show how the reconfiguration of one of the industries considered an excellence of the Made-In-Italy might serve as use-case of flexibility and openness towards the reconfigured needs of the overall global community.
