OptiFibers - Optimized Structures through Additive Manufacturing with Continuous Carbon Fibers

The project aims to produce optimized components for the automotive industry based on additively manufactured Carbon continuous-fiber reinforced plastics. The team will use the Continuous Fiber Fused Filament Fabrication (CF4) technology to produce specimens and functional samples made in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic, where the fibers' orientation is determined not only by manufacturing considerations but also by structural optimization. The CF4 is a relatively new technique, and there is little data available as regards the mechanical performance of the fabricated components. Moreover, the modeling and structural optimization activities are still at an early stage. The aim of the proof of concept is to set up a structural optimization model able to deal with multiple loads, in-plane and out-of-plane. The optimized structures will be printed and mechanically tested for validation, employing advanced structural health monitoring techniques. The project's outcome will be the optimization software, an experimental dataset, and some small sample components.
