The project GeoSciences IR aims at creating the Italian network for geosciences, a new research infrastructure for the Italian network of regional geological surveys (namely “Rete Italiana dei Servizi Geologici” RISG), a coordination network among ISPRA, Geological Survey of Italy and “Regional Geological Surveys” (RGSs), i.e. technical offices within Regions, Autonomous Provinces and Regional Environmental Agencies with a specific mandate in the geological domain at regional level. GeoSciences will provide to ISPRA and RGSs the technical and scientific skills to carry out their duties concerning responsibilities at national (ISPRA) and regional (RGSs) level in specific geological matters themes identified by RGSs as prioritaire. This target will be achieved through several actions of transfer of scientific and technical knowledge implemented by Universities and Research Institutes, acknowledged as scientific excellence on priority themes. Through a highly technological cloud infrastructure, GeoSciences will to access to a huge amount of data, services, tools, specifically implemented by project partners, made available to target users to fulfil with their institutional mandate. In order to reach this objective, the technological infrastructure will be built following international standards on data, metadata and services (e.g. INSPIRE) and according to FAIR principles. Users will benefit from specific softwares, tools for cloud processing and e-learning modules aimed at increasing technical and scientific skills in the geological domain. GeoSciences will be complementary in terms of target users as well content with other initiatives under implementation aimed at developing data and research infrastructure in the field of earth sciences at European (e.g. EPOS, EGDI) and national (e.g. Mirror Copernicus) level. A strong liaison with such initiatives will be built with the aim to better address individual goals and to identify eventual fields of cooperation.
