The First Pillar – Excellent science in Horizon Europe: ERC, MSCA and research infrastructures programmes

Horizon Europe is the next European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for the 2021-2027 period.

The programme, with a view to evolving from the current Horizon 2020, aims to: strengthen the scientific and technological bases of the EU and the European Research Area, improve the innovative capacity, the competitiveness of the European industrial system and generate employment in Europe.

Pillar I, the pillar devoted to "Excellent Science", will include the European Research Council (ERC), Marie-Skłodwoska Curie Action (MSCA) and Research Infrastructures (INFRA) programmes.

The webinar, held in Italian by lecturers from the European Research Promotion Agency (APRE), will illustrate the various funding schemes of these three programmes. As to the ERC, the webinar will focus on the main elements that characterise a successful proposal.

The lecturers are Marco Ferraro (National Contact Point for the ERC and MSCA programmes in Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe) and Daniele Gizzi (National Contact Point for Research Infrastructures in the Horizon2020 and Horizon Europe Programme).

Mr. Marco Ferraro bio
After a degree in Interpreting and Translation, he worked for a year and a half at the European Parliament's Information Office in Italy, in the field of communication and promotion of the European Parliament's activities. After obtaining a master degree in European Planning and Internationalisation of Enterprises at the Italian Society for International Organisation (SIOI), he joined APRE in September 2013. From March 2014 he began to cover the role of National Contact Point for the European Research Council and Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions programmes in Horizon 2020. His expertise on Horizon 2020 is complemented by his experience in international project management (funded by Horizon 2020) and cooperation between National Contact Points. Marco Ferraro has in his background numerous lectures on Horizon 2020 at universities and research centres.

Mr. Daniele Gizzi bio
Bachelor degree in International Relations from the University of Pisa (110/110). Since 2010 he has worked as a project manager and consultant on the European Commission direct management programmes for various Italian public bodies (municipalities, provinces, regions). He has served as coordinator in many international development cooperation projects in the Middle East, the Balkans, Maghreb, Eastern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa funded under regional, national, European and private funding programmes. Within the projects he has carried out activities such as coordination, financial reporting, monitoring, training and communication. Since 2013 he has been responsible for training on European Commission Direct Funding Funds for the Association of Local Authorities - Focus Europe. In 2017 he joined APRE - Agency for the Promotion of European Research where he has held the role of project manager of the following Projects funded within the Horizon 2020 Programme: MERIL-2 (Data collection and mapping of Research Infrastructures), RISCAPE (Communication and dissemination activities), IPERION (International cooperation with CELAC Countries), BIOVOICES (Coordination and stakeholder engagement), RICH-2 (Support activities for coordination, dissemination and communication). Since February 2019 he is National Contact Point for Research Infrastructures in the Horizon2020 Programme.
