Green light for work on the Aerospace Platform

With a provision from the Ministero delle Infrastrutture e dei Trasporti - Provveditorato interregionale per le opere pubbliche per il Piemonte la Valle d’Aosta e la Liguria - the green light has been given to start work on the construction of the Aerospace Platform, the project that Politecnico di Torino will carry out in building 37 in Corso Marche, leased to the University by Leonardo. The project is the first step in the realisation of the Aerospace City project, coordinated by the Regione PIemonte and which will involve public and private institutions in the creation of a centre entirely dedicated to research in the aerospace sector.

The building work, which will be carried out by Politecnico, currently has an overall budget of approximately 44 million euros and is financed through internal university funds for approximately 27 million and significant external funding defined within the framework of the ‘Programme agreement for the creation of centres for innovation and technology transfer through research, the demonstration and curricular, professionalising and continuous training functional to the development of manufacturing industry 4.0 and the aerospace industry", signed in March 2019, which provides for an amount of 15 million to be paid by Regione Piemonte and 2.5 million to be paid by Camera di Commercio di Torino.

The research centre, covering a total of about 15 thousand square metres with over 6 thousand square metres of outdoor space, will be able to accommodate about 12 thousand square metres of shared meeting spaces and laboratories for research activities conducted by the University, but also in collaboration with companies in the aerospace sector.

"This infrastructure is part of a broad framework of investments by Politecnico di Torino in the aerospace sector, aimed at the university's three missions,’ said the Rector of the Polytechnic University, Stefano Corgnati. ’Starting from the strengthening of the educational programmes to the establishment of the new Interdepartmental Centre for Aerospace, an interdisciplinary playground that will systematise the skills of the various Departments and promote innovative processes in full collaboration with the local production fabric, which is increasingly oriented towards an industrial vocation with a high technological density".

"In the week that the IAC (International Astronautical Congress) is taking place in Milan, with the participation of 30 Piedmontese companies and an innovative communication format on our production system, this news has a very high value. Regione Piemonte has always believed in the aerospace sector as one of the pillars to be enhanced and developed. A supply chain that has a positive growth trend with a turnover of over 8 billion and 35 thousand jobs. The city of aerospace thus takes another substantial step forward", adds the Assessore alle attività produttive della Regione Piemonte Andrea Tronzano.
