Geotechnical investigation and back-analysis of a large landslide with legal implications

On October 13, 2025, at 5:30 PM in the Albenga Room (DISEG), professor Stanley M. Miller (University of Idaho) will present a seminar on the geotechnical investigation and back-analysis of a major landslide involving an irrigation canal in the United States, with significant legal implications. The case, which ended with a decision by the Idaho Supreme Court, highlights how engineering practice can interface with the legal system to shape public policy and legal precedent. Miller, an international expert in slope stability and reinforced structures, will discuss the investigations carried out and the role of engineering in resolving legal disputes.
