From Libraries to Urban Reading Space: Creating Accesible Community for EVERYONE

Yuting Jiang (Erasmus+ Ph.D. program between Politecnico di Torino and Tongji University) will discuss her ongoing research with the research fellow Xiaoxu Liang and the PhDs Manli Zhao (Politecnico di Torino) and Jin Shuang (Joint Ph.D. program between Politecnico di Torino and Tsinghua University).

In the context of global urban regeneration, particularly in mega metropolises, there is an urgent need to reconceptualize accessible collective spaces for citizens in over-commercialized districts to enhance design strategies. This study investigates five libraries and bookshops in historic urban setting of Shanghai, China. Employing a quantitative assessment framework, the research analyzes the impacts of various development and management models on the accessibility of open-to[1]public reading spaces. It identifies key on enhancing user experience from the perspectives of functionality, location, and operations, and further compares the differences between enterprise-led and government-led approaches.

The seminar will be held both in person, in the Sala Mollino, and online at this link.

Event coordinated by Camilla Forina and Leonardo Ramondetti.
