Health economic modelling: what is and why we need it?

On Wednesday 17 January 2023, an event entitled "Health economic modelling: what is and why do we need it?", organised by the Department of Mathematical Sciences "Giuseppe Luigi Lagrange" - DISMA of the Politecnico
will be held in Aula 2D.

Abstract

The clinical development of novel healthcare products (pharmaceuticals and medical devices) leads to multiple therapies being potentially available for a specific therapeutic indication. However, the resources of the National Health Systems (NHS) are limited. Therefore, novel healthcare products need to be compared to the currently available standard of care, to understand the costs and benefits associated with the introduction of a novel healthcare product in the NHS. This is achieved through health economic modeling, through different types of analyses (e.g. budget impact analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis). In this presentation, an overview of what health economic modeling is will be provided, along with examples of the different types of analyses commonly conducted. In addition, the different types of skills which are sought after in health economics will be summarized.

Speaker: Simone Rivolo, Ph.D., is a Director and Senior Research Scientist with the Evidence Synthesis, Modeling & Communication group at Evidera, a PPD business, and based out near Milan.
