Biography

Andrea Arsiccio is a Ph.D. student in Chemical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in 2016. His research focuses on protein stability and formulation
development for biopharmaceuticals to be freeze dried. He also has an expertise in Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of biological systems, and physical chemistry in general. In 2018, he was a visiting researcher for six months at University of California, Santa Barbara, where he worked in the field of surface-driven denaturation of proteins and aggregation of amyloid-forming peptides. For this purpose, he used enhanced sampling techniques including replica echange MD (REMD), metadynamics and variationally enhanced sampling (VES). In the same year he also spent two months at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (Potters Bar, UK), where he investigated the effects of freezing and freeze drying on protein stability, with a particular focus on the role of controlled nucleation techniques. To achieve this result, he performed cell-based potency assays, size exclusion chromatography and dynamic light scattering on model systems, including the human growth hormone, interleukin-2, lactate dehydrogenase, myoglobin and factor VIII. Using a modelling approach, he also developed a design space tool for the freezing step of freeze drying, with the objective to optimize process conditions. During his Ph.D. he constantly aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical modeling and experiments in the field of protein stability, and biopreservation in general.
