Overall Project Objectives: to provide children with new opportunities for personal growth, discovery, and social interaction by valuing their languages, talents, and passions.
Methods: educational activities, creative workshops, games, and community celebration events.
Expected Outcomes: increased self-confidence, reduced anxiety, and a stronger sense of community.
The three main activities involving DISMA:
MotherMath: A Multilingual Mathematics After-School Programme
Objectives:- Deliver extracurricular support in science and mathematics in both Italian and the students' mother tongues for newly arrived immigrant (NAI) and non-Italian-speaking students, fostering continuity and deeper learning;
- Strengthen the inclusiveness and intercultural dimension of after-school programmes offered by partner schools and organisations;
- Improve the quality, effectiveness, and educational impact of extracurricular STEM support.
Methods: Two 2-hour afternoon sessions per week will be delivered over a 12-month period at the premises of Diskolé APS and the San Paolo Parish Centre. Activities will be coordinated by professional educators. Students from the Polytechnic University of Turin will participate as facilitators, leading mathematical games and hands-on learning activities.
Expected Outcomes: Engagement of at least 80 Italian-speaking and non-Italian-speaking children. Improved academic performance among participating students. Reduced mathematics anxiety.
Family Polytechnic Walks
Objectives: Increase children's and families' knowledge of their local area. Promote the Polytechnic University of Turin as a physical, social, and cultural space, integral to the local community.Methods: Organisation of four guided walks combined with playful mathematics workshops held on the Polytechnic University of Turin campus, involving children and their families.
Expected Outcomes: Engagement of at least 50 families.
Community Celebration Events
Objectives: Strengthen and promote relationships within the local educational community by fostering connections among schools, families, and local organisations through shared social experiences and community events.Methods: Organisation of five community events hosted by project partners (schools and community organisations), including community- and family-engagement activities and the participation of at least five additional local organisations. During each event, DISMA–Politecnico will deliver a travelling mathematics workshop, while project partners will organise complementary community animation and outreach activities.
Expected Outcomes: Engagement of at least 500 local families. Active involvement of at least 20 families in the co-design, planning, and delivery of the events.
