Biography

Manuela De Maddis is Researcher of Manufacturing Technologies and Systems at the Department of Management and Production Engineering (DIGEP) of the Politecnico di Torino, since 2005. She received the Master of Science Degree in Management Engineering in 2001 from the University of Calabria (Italy) and PhD in Industrial Production System Engineering in 2004 from Department of Management and Production Engineering of the Politecnico di Torino. Her early research aimed to investigate the industrial procedures used to specify and verify geometric tolerances, highlighting improvements achievable introducing mathematical concepts in accordance with ISO Geometric Product Specifications and Verification Standards (GPS). Simultaneously her research dealt with the programming and control of production and in particular with the analysis of the performance of production lines and handling systems using mathematical models and discrete event simulation models. Her applied research has engaged in optimization and monitoring of mechanical production processes such as cutting, welding, forming and casting on both traditional and innovative materials. Currently, her scientific interests ranging from design, modelling and optimisation to the inspection of traditional and innovative welding and joining processes as well as the digitalization of these processes for the development of Decision Support System based on machine learning techniques for process monitoring, predictive analysis and quality control. A particular interest is destructive and non-destructive testing for joint inspection. One challenge is to introduction Infrared Thermography as a non-invasive, cost effective and reliable technique for both defect detection and process monitoring support.
