Biography

Massimo Rundo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Energy (DENERG), Politecnico di Torino, and the coordinator of the Fluid Power Research Laboratory (FPRL). His research focuses on the modelling, simulation and experimental validation of fluid power components and systems, with particular emphasis on positive displacement pumps, hydraulic valves and mobile machinery hydraulics. He has developed both lumped parameter and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models for various types of pumps, including gerotor, external gear, crescent, vane and piston pumps. His studies on incomplete filling phenomena have been applied across multiple pump types, analyzing suction-side dynamics and flow losses at high rotational speeds. These models have been validated through extensive experimental campaigns. Prof. Rundo has also conducted studies on flow forces in hydraulic valves, including pressure control and directional control valves. In the field of mobile hydraulics, he has published comparative analyses of different system architectures, such as Load Sensing (LS) and electro-hydraulic configurations, applied to machines like excavators and telehandlers. He is the author or co-author of 70 publications indexed in Scopus. His work has been published in high-impact journals within his field, including ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering, Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory, Automation in Construction, International Journal of Thermofluids, SAE International Journal of Engines. He teaches graduate-level courses in Mobile and Industrial Fluid Power and Automotive Fluid Power Systems and is a long-standing member of the PhD Program Board in Energetics. He has been the principal supervisor for over 70 master’s theses and regularly serves as an external reviewer for doctoral dissertations. Prof. Rundo is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Fluid Power and an Advisory Board Member of the Global Fluid Power Society. He is also a Scientific Committee Member of major international fluid power conferences, including ASME/BATH Symposium on Fluid Power and Motion Control and International Maha Fluid Power Conference. He has coordinated numerous industry-funded research projects with companies such as Casappa, Duplomatic and Pierburg Pump Technology.
