PhD Course | Introduction to Hydrodynamic Stability

Flavio Giannetti, Full Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Salerno, will lead a PhD-level course on hydrodynamic instability theory and flow transition, that will be held from 8 to 10 July 2026 in the Meeting Room C. Ferrari DIMEAS of Politecnico di Torino.

Giannetti's research focuses on fluid mechanics, hydrodynamic stability, flow control, and reduced-order modelling, with particular expertise in the analysis of instability mechanisms in complex fluid flows.
The course, “Instability Theory in Fluid Mechanics”, will introduce the fundamental principles and analytical techniques used to investigate the onset and development of flow instabilities. The programme will cover dynamical systems and bifurcation theory, linear stability analysis of fluid flows, instability mechanisms in parallel and boundary-layer flows, non-modal stability and transient growth, convective and absolute instabilities, and global stability analysis of non-parallel flows. Particular attention will be devoted to structural sensitivity and mode localization, providing students with both physical insight and modern computational tools for stability analysis.
Theoretical lectures will be complemented by hands-on computational sessions using MATLAB/Python and FreeFem++, allowing participants to gain practical experience with the numerical methods employed in hydrodynamic stability studies.
