Heritage-making practices and narratives

Supervisors: Filippo De Pieri; Carlo Mambriani; Sergio Pace; Edoardo Piccoli; Marco Trisciuoglio

This line of research observes the processes of heritage recognition and institutionalization, with a special reference to the built landscape, integrated with an attention to the growing importance of intangible heritage.

The study focuses on the practices that lead to the assignment of a heritage value to an object or place; to the forms of institutionalization of such recognition – for example, through nation-state or UNESCO list; to the ways in which sites and objects recognized as part of a heritage are transformed over time; finally, to the potential conflicts that run through the process.

Special attention is given to the historical narratives that support heritage-making practices and to the relationship between these forms of public history and academic research.
