Abstract
The research work of INFI-PA6-RECO concerns innovative synthesis, processing and application of polyamide 6 as fibers and composites, with a full commitment to sustainability by assuring durability of the products (waste prevention) and their full recyclability (waste reduction). The goals are the development of fibers with enhanced properties for the textile sector, nanofibers for making filters, Single Polymer Composite with continuous PA6 filaments and a matrix made of anionic PA6. By engineering the polymerisation process (both hydrolytic and anionic), optimising the spinning processing new PA6 fibers grades will be tailored, in particular: a) PA6 with enhanced durability assuring better tenacity, stain and flame resistance, water and oil repellency, elastomeric behaviour to substitute mixed fibers as spandex; b) PA6 nanofibers, through new electrospinning processes to produce membranes for environmental engineering, namely water and air filtration; c) PA6 with tenacity and adhesion to anionic PA6 matrix to develop monomaterial composites.
The project implementation will leverage the know-how of the Host Organisation, Aquafil SpA a world leader in PA6, and the interdisciplinary competences of the Research Organisation, INSTM, under the coordination of an experienced researcher with a good track record in polymer science, including surface modification of polymers and electrospinning. Expected outcomes of the research work are advanced textile fibers/fabrics (also elastomeric fibers tested for clothing), filtration membranes, developed in collaboration with UFI FIlter SpA, and sport goods made of the PA6 Single Polymer Composites, in particular a skateboard fabricated in collaboration with Kape GmbH. The project includes dissemination and communication activities, training of researchers (including 4 PhD students and 2 postdocs) and technicians with sound technical skills and strong environmental consciousness.
