Abstract
The eFITNESS Project is centred upon the integration of thermal prosuming paradigms within district heating networks (DHNs), with the final aim of enabling bidirectional energy exchange through deployment of heat pumps at end-user premises. These units, beyond serving as instruments forthe decarbonisation of DHNs, may also act as potential sources of electrical flexibility on the grid and revenue streams for network operators, by providing ancillary dispatch services in real-time response to dynamic price signals. eFITNESS aims to industrialise novel bidirectional thermal exchange substations (henceforth, BTESs), able to transform customers from passive receivers of thermal energy into active nodes forlocalised thermal production.
This shift is pursued within a framework of flexibility and interconnectivity, optimising operational performance, given the evolving thermohydraulic parameters of the DHN and the potential for sector coupling with electrical grids. This project encompasses the development of BTESs via the engineering of components and subassemblies, the design of optimised hydraulic configurations, and the integration of physics-informed optimisation models alongside advanced control algorithms. These systems will enable dynamic balancing of thermal demand and supply, leveraging the integration of geothermal and/or aerothermal sources, coupling them with renewable energy technologies such as photovoltaics, thermal storages, and real-time price-responsive control mechanisms. This development is also envisaged within the broader context of ancillary service provision generated by the functional integration between Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Besides, eFITNESS aspires to scale this analytical framework from individual pilot buildings to a broader portfolio of distributed heat pumps across the DHNs, thereby enabling the aggregation of distributed generation systems capable to effectively interact with both thermal and electrical networks. Finally, the project seeks to optimise multi-level “cloud/edge” control performance, ensuring scalability, security, and interoperability. The adoption of data-driven methodologies and open protocols will guarantee flexibility, replicability, and technological independence. The anticipated outcome is a more efficient, sustainable and integrated DHN, contributing to enhanced electrical flexibility, costreduction, increased profitability for network operators, improve the Coefficient of Performance (CoP), increase the self-consumption ofrenewable sources, and realise a tangible contribution to the decarbonisation of both civil and industrial sectors
