Abstract

Terrestrial navigation play a central role in Environmental Applications, e.g. in terms of Sustainable Development for Transportation. Remote Sensing and Geodesy provide enabling technologies for sustainable mobility aiming to raise the awareness of Accessibility needs in Urban Transportation and to improve Transit performance. Advanced Public Transport systems are the main levers for the growth of positioning systems that can help create a more inclusive Transportation System. Mobile-device based GNSS data collection points to exciting options for travel Surveys. Satellite positioning allows to address the dynamic properties of travel behaviour by capturing detailed spatial and temporal conditions throughout the traveling path. Nevertheless, with increasing reliance on GPS Data, a major technical issue is the quality of positioning service. In particular, access to Global Positioning System (GPS) raw measurements, as well as other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou), acquired by Smartphones is a strong motivation to investigate their employment for high-accuracy Navigation. Multi-GNSS and multi-frequency Satellite Data support high-accuracy positioning within the mass market. Exploiting Geodetic satellites to bring high accuracy to all devices, the Performance Assessment and implementation of GNSS techniques are meaningful. High accuracy can be fulfilled by low-cost receivers coupled with inertial Sensor and dedicated GNSS Antennas, utilizing GPS Networks. In addition, considering the current availability of authoritative and Opens Source geodata, incorporating essential mobility geometric features and their attributes, a Central Positioning Aggregator Engine can store and aggregate data coming from different sources. In the meantime, many other data source are available (e.g. Floating Car Data, video sequences for Image Interpretation, etc.). Consequently one of the major challenges in Transportation Planning and mobility management is to transfer different data into a unified Information System that preserves access to legacy data, allowing further processing and analysis. In the next future, protocols based on vehicle On Board Unit and CPAE one-to-one communication, will enable the possibility to monitor real-time flows allowing users to obtain information to be able to modify their movements, both to guarantee a personal advantage, but more generally a collective one. This collective advantage, measurable in terms of Travel Time, Environmental Impact, etc., will lead to the definition of new mobility policies based on a paradigm of flow optimization dynamically balanced on current traffic conditions. In this project, the main aim is to highlight how geospatial technologies can support sustainable mobility, paying particular attention to three different domain of application: MaaS policies, Restricted Traffic Areas dynamic management and private vehicles positional data analysis to extract driving experiences.
