Biografia

Marco Barla is Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering (ICAR / 07) and belongs to the Department of Structural, Geotechnical and Building Engineering (DISEG) of the Politecnico di Torino. He was employed at the Politecnico as a Research Associate in 2003 and from 2016 took the current position. He is a renowned expert in the field due to the research achievements obtained and the impact provided to relevant engineering projects, as testified by the records below and the number of assignments, contracts and recognitions received.

Marco Barla holds positions in the government team of the Politecnico, he is the Rector's Advisor for sports activities, President of the University Sports Committee, member of the University Quality Control Center and a member of the Department Board. He is an effective member of the Commission of Civil Engineering and of the Doctoral Commission of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

He is the President of ELGIP (European Large Geotechnical Institutes Platform), member of Iacmag Board and of the ISSMGE Technical Committee 28 (Underground construction in soft ground), Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Geomechanics ASCE and member of the editorial board of Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology and Soils and Rocks.

He was Associate Editor of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (2016-2019), Assistant Editor of Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (2001-2006), Deputy Director of the Diplab Geomeccanica laboratory (2006-2012) member of the Academic Senate (2012-2015) and responsible for Geotechnical Engineering Qualification Exams for engineering practice (2010-2013).

He is the coordinator of a research group that carries out activities in the field of laboratory testing on soils and rocks, of numerical modeling of geotechnical engineering problems with particular reference to tunnel excavation and slope stability, monitoring of slopes with ground-based radar and the development of geothermal energy (www.rockmech.polito.it). Research interests also focus on the time-dependent behavior of geomaterials related to tunneling in squeezing and swelling grounds, laboratory testing, geotechnical monitoring and early warning systems.

Author of more than 180 papers on national or international journals and conferences, editor of conference proceedings, a text book and 1 patent (ENERTUN, N°: 102016000020821). Scopus: h-index 19, citations 989; WoS: h-index 15, citations 684; Scholar: h-index 22, citations 1717.

He regularly takes part in national and international conferences, also as an invited speaker, member of the Scientific Committee or organizer. He is the chair of Iacmag 2020 (postponed to 2021 due to the Covid pandemic).

Responsible for more than 50 research projects and contracts on national and international funds.

Member of AGI, Associazione Geotecnica Italiana, of the ISSMGE, International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, of IACMAG, International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics, of ISRM, International Society for Rock Mechanics and of ASCE, American Society for Civil Engineers and of EGS-A, Enhanced Geothermal System Association.

In 2005 he was awarded the Iacmag Award for the successful organization of the 11th International Conference of Iacmag, in 2007 won the Best Paper Award in the topic "The path from characterization to modeling (T2)" at the 11th ISRM Congress with the paper "Setting up a new direct shear testing apparatus", in 2011 won the ‘IACMAG Excellent Contributions Award’, in 2016 the Telford Premium from the Institution of Civil Engineers for the paper: Energy from geo-structures: a topic of growing interest published on Environmental Geotechnics 2(1) and in 2018 Enertun was nominated among the top 5 projects of the European Geothermal Innovation Award.
